One-Finger Johnny is how I categorize my playing ability. I never have been able to land three or four fingers on a fret board, simultaneously, in the correct place, to avoid making a chord that doesn't sound like a strangled chicken. But, I found out, by playing an electric guitar, that I can play a truncated chord, with one finger, and slide it up and down the instrument, to affect different chords. So that's what I do. ..and how the CD got its name.
What I'm trying to say with my music, is: "Don't let your inabilities stop you from achieving your desires." I have learned to make some kind of music with very little coordination and no more knowledge than what the strings are called. I can't think about what I'm playing, and do it, at the same time--so it is little use knowing the names of things, when trying to remember what they are called, stops the music.
I use my music as a thinking pool. I dive into the sounds and let my mind wander, while I ponder the decisions of the day. I cannot do that if I'm trying to duplicate somebody else's music, so all of my stuff is original, unless I stumble into someone else's riff in my own wonderings. I'm trying to record music that I can read or paint to.
Some people start their day by praying. I like to start my day by playing. I don't ask God for favors, so my music is a way of saying, "Thanks, I'm Happy to be alive. ..where do we go from here?" My inability to articulate my intentions with a guitar, always makes me laugh--where as, elsewhere in my life, my failings always make me angry. So if I can start my day, by laughing at my mistakes, then that attitude, sometimes, clings to me for a good part of the day. ..sometimes.
