Captain Funnybone

Solo Guitar Albums

The name Captain Funnybone actually originates from my CB radio "handle" Funnybone, which was my call sign for many years, back in the days when many homesteading people in the hills of Arkansas did not have the luxury of a telephone. My rank of Captain is not designated in any kind of military hierarchy, but rather because I am the skipper of a 17 ft. Grumman, lake-going canoe. [joke]

In addition, I have a goofy habit of laughing when I make an error in my playing. I record by myself, so an error is of little consequence. ..just a pain in the butt to edit out. I am always trying to find new tunes--but if I have to stop and set up the recording equipment, after I stumble on to some new little ditty, I lose the thread, and I am seldom able to pick up where I left off. ..and the new music is gone for ever, along with the good mood that came with it!!!   Also, I find that if I record everything I play, then I always try really hard to make it sound good. ..try is the key word, here. ..but there is usually quite a bit of laughter in between. ..much to my chagrin.

I find making music particularly challenging. I have made my living building and fixing things, in this material world, and in so-doing, I sometimes get the idea that I can do most anything I want. ..until I pick up a musical instrument. Then I find out just how clumsy and mindless I can be. I would actually rather not make any errors, but even after playing a guitar pretty steadily since 1991 or so, I still am not familiar enough with the instrument, so as to anticipate exactly what note a string, two or three over and up a fret, is going to sound like, all the time. Mozart, I'm not. But making music is much more fun than just listening to some other bozo sing about his life.   So that is what I do.   I make for a small band, but at least we don't argue about what to play next.

Thick & Thin

Guitar-Duo Albums

Thick & Thin is a two-man collaboration, comprised of my late friend, Will Shannon, and myself. Will started playing a guitar at a very early age, and was as proficient, as I am inept. Luckily, he could figure out what was doing, because I sure couldn't tell him. ..and what-ever he was doing, was upside-down and backwards, to me. None-the-less, we could usually connect in some kind of fashion that resembled music, and when edited down, the resulting sound files sound surprisingly Fresh and Lively. ..as if Will were still with us.

For a taste of Will's solo playing, with me on percussion, click the following link to the Will Shannon Remembrance site.
